Heads up, folks. Arcade Fire might be signed to an indie label, but they’re not as “indie” as you think. They’re mainstream now.
They got three Grammy Award nominations last night, one of which happens to be for album of the year. They’ve also been nominated for best alternative music album and best rock performance by a duo or group with vocals for “Ready To Start.” All the nods are related to this year’s The Suburbs album.
Sure, with declining record sales, Grammy nominations might not make a band necessarily “mainstream,” right? Well, consider that these categories pit them against the likes of Muse, Kings Of Leon, Eminem, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, and it’s hard to argue otherwise. And hey, since all those bands are able to sell out stadiums and Arcade Fire’s tour for The Suburbs has proven they’re able to do that as well (Madison Square Garden, hello?)… yeah. Mainstream.
Drake’s picked up four nominations, including best new artist. He’ll battle Justin Bieber in that category. Neil Young garnered three nods, including best songwriter and best solo rock performance.
Other nominees include The Black Keys, who are up for six awards. Mumford & Sons and Florence & The Machine have both been nominated for best new artist, and Mumford are also up for best rock song. Bizarrely, Ray LaMontagne And The Pariah Dogs are up for song of the year.
The 2011 Grammy Awards will be held Feb. 13 at 8 PM ET/PT, and will be televised on CBS.
