The inevitable has happened… Like snow falling in winter or receiving a smaller refund at tax time because you didn't actually qualify for the exemption or dropping your toast butter side down — Arcade Fire's The Suburbs has grabbed the #1 spot on the campus chart for the week of August 15 – 21 2010.
The Suburbs switches places with last week's chart top dog, Wolf Parade's Expo 86 rising up to #1 in its third week on the chart. The Suburbs also did with conviction, garnering an amazing 1662 points, a compiled total rivaling the record-breaking totals of The New Pornographers' Twin Cinema numbers of September 2005. By contrast, the #2 album, Expo 86 received 1112 points, 2/3 of Arcade Fire's total. Also of interest, The Suburbs is only the third album to top 1600 total points in a specific week. The New Pornographers' Twin Cinema received 1684 point in Septe ember 2005 while Broken Social Scene's self-titled release grabbed 1601 points in its first week on the campus chart in October 2005.
Menomena's Mines rises four places to land at #3 with 763 points followed by two titles holding the same places from last week, Tokyo Police Club's Champ at #4 and Rae Spoon's Love Is A Hunter at #5. With the #1 album racking up such high totals especially in the summer when there are traditionally less campus radio contributors, the points totals drop substantially as Champ received 588 points and Love Is A Hunter received 541 points. Everything else was under 500 points.
Best Coast's Crazy For You made a spectacular ascent this week rising 34 spots to land at #6. Sarah Harmer's Oh Little Fire rebounded with two place rise to #7. Wavves' King Of The Beach which debuted at #3 fell five places to #8 this week followed by The Black Keys' Brothers jumping up six spots to #9 and The Budos Band's III sliding up three spots to #10.
The Chart Sizzler for the highest debut belongs to Winter Gloves' All Red entering at #14 this week. All red appeared on only five individual charts this week, but Winter Gloves did it on several prime charts including #2 on CISM (Montreal); #4 on CJAM (Windsor) and #10 on CIUT (Toronto).
The runner-up new entry this week was far behind with Mt. St. Helens Vietn am Band's Where The Messengers Meet arriving at #28. Colleen And Paul's self-titled release entered at #32 followed by Shapes And Sizes' Candle To Your Eye at #33.
Caribou's Swim continues to rack up weeks on the chart. Swim fell 19 places to #38 in its 17th week on the campus chart. Ten other titles have ten or weeks service on the chart with The New Pornographers' Together falling seven spots to #17 in its 16th week; Broken Social Scene's Forgiveness Rock Record falling 13 places to #21 and Holy Fuck's Latin re-entering at #44 both in their 15th week on the chart.
The specialty charts showed little change among their #1 albums. Only two of the five charts have new #1s, Mares Of Thrace's The Moulting rises four spots to grab #1 on the Metal/Punk chart and Dvas' Society moves up a spot to take over the top spot on the Electronic chart.
The Jazz/Blues chart featured five new entries led by Franco Proietti Morph-Tet's second album, Live! A Weekend at Centre St-Ambroise debuting at #4.
The World/Folk chart features three debuts with Rocky Dawuni's Hymns For The Rebel Soul at #7. The Hip Hop chart has only two new entries with El-P's Weareallgoingtoburninhell arriving at #5.
