If you passed a random cup, glass, or beer bottle of liquid that was sitting out in the open, unattended, you probably wouldn't drink it, would you?
Common sense says no, because even though it might look like apple juice in a glass, leftover beer some lameass just couldn't finish, or even milk someone couldn't use to wash down the rest of their lunch, appearances — as the adage goes — can be deceiving.
See, that's because that "apple juice" might actually be pee, that "beer" might be full of spit, pee or who knows what else, that "coffee" might actually be bug spray, and that "milk"… well, who wants to think about that?
The Dudes' Dan Vacon learned the hard way not to swig from a random cup at this year's Folk On The Rocks Festival in Yellowknife.
See, Vacon and his band are known for getting injured in incredibly unfortunate circumstances, and have been doing so since before they released their appropriately titled Blood Guts Bruises Cuts album last year. Basically, they're accident prone… and horribly so.
In fact, that might be an understatement. Vacon once flew off his BMX bike going home from a party, breaking his collarbone and getting 12 stitches to his head. That same BMX bike later hurt drummer Scott Ross, who smashed his front teeth out of his face after clipping a car, flying over his handlebars and landing face first. He also got road rash on his tongue, which just sounds… ew.
So when Vacon saw what he thought was a random cup of coffee sitting on the amp he was using at the beer gardens at Folk On The Rocks, he thought nothing of chugging what was left in it, since, as he puts it in a video you can see below, "chugging random drinks is kind of funny to me."
What happened next wasn't really that amusing for him, though, and he probably doesn't think chugging random drinks is hilarious anymore.
"Dude, it was poisoned," he told CBC Radio 3's Grant Lawrence. "It tasted like DEET or something, and like, immediately, my lips got like — they started buzzing and I couldn't feel my face, and like, I was poisoned on stage. And then just a short while ago, I puked in the bushes. And as I puked in the bushes, my lips got numb again, like as it came back the other way."
Although he said he was feeling much better after the barf, it's hard for us to imagine Vacon's going to drink from a random glass on stage again any time soon.
You can see The Dudes hopefully not hurting themselves on stage at Calgary's Ship And Anchor on July 28.
