There's a very good chance that the Flaming Lips's Ender's Game-inspired Peace Sword EP will be miles better than the movie that inspired it, at least judging from “Assassin Beetle - The Dream Is Ending.” Unlike Harrison Ford, who now plays a gruff but secretly loveable high school teacher in every movie, the band aren't content to rest on their laurels, expanding the spectrum of space-themed music with planet Earth's sounds.
Battle-ready drums and distorted moaning in the first movement give way to strings brimming over gale force wind in the second. And unlike Ben Kingsley, who doesn't seem aware that you can, in fact, turn down a role, the band knows how to edit. The music blossoms into the cinematic, like the loopy second cousin of M83's Oblivion soundtrack, but does so without clutter, radiating with a feverish curiosity.
You can pick up the Flaming Lips' Peace Sword EP on October 28th.
