As a kid I remember my parents having a lot of meditation on tape. VHS tapes with images of time-lapsed clouds, CDs full of ostensibly soothing voices offering roadmaps of DIY chakra-probing, that sort of thing. “No End,” from Helsinki psyche-pop mainstay Jaakko Eino Kalevi, is a song that delivers on the inner calm promised by this sort of chicanery, by embracing a loosely-fitted improvisational spirit and a story, in the form of a heartbreaking duet with Suad Khalifa. There's life all over the place: in the translucent vocals, the thick, springy basslines and the scraggled synth notes that eventually fray everything. Grab a nice cushion and settle in.
Jaakko (yes, pronounced like the Animaniac) will release his Dreamzone EP for Weird World Records on December 2nd.
