On “Avocado, Baby” Los Campesinos! make a decent case for the avocado as the best fruit-based spirit guide. The latest song from NO BLUES recruits the Cardiff Cougar Allstars cheerleading squad to turn the anthemic maypole punk up to heart-magnifying levels, while deepening the purples of the song's very deep bruises. The lyrical focal point attempts to transfer the energy used to rally a football team to someone just trying to live: “A heart of stone, rind so tough it's crazy, that's why they call me the avocado, baby.” All that brawn isn't enough, though; the band may insist that they're strong enough to bleed gravel, but their maximal guitar-driven ascent claims otherwise.
NO BLUES is out in October on Wicheta. Preorder here.
