Gang Gang Dance's Eye Contact was released two years ago, and its ambling tropical patchwork is as disharmonious with current sonic trends as it was challenging to sunny, Afropop-inspired music then. On his solo debut as bEEdEEgEE, Brian DeGraw makes a new patchwork of sounds, one that accounts for modern radio and the underground's shift towards colder, more monochrome sounds.
Like Arca or Clams Casino, first single “Bricks” cribs from hip-hop, but also innovates comfortably within the vivid spectrum of DeGraw's old group. 808s and pitched vocals dance with unpredictable rhythms and menacing synths, which soon drop out for chirping, bright poolside vibes for some small island on the edge of the map. Someone get me a monkey brain margarita.
bEEdEEgEE release SUM/ONE on December 4th via 4AD.
