When Kelela agreed to release her debut mixtape CUT 4 ME on Fade To Mind, label head Prince William gave her over 50 tracks of futureperfect production from the labels's roster. Beats from Nguzunguza, Morri$, and Kingdom all feature, as well as Jam City, who pushes a cybernetic sexiness all over “Keep It Cool.” It starts off sounding like an assemblage of dusty memories, with a jammed photocopier, light wooden pops, and an ecstatic moan, but home-sampled maximalism takes over: the bark of a small dog, water drops, wooden finger snaps, and chandelier-lit synths. These elements never clash, but Kelela's lyrics leak with more than enough disharmony. Love is a vacillating sort of war here, and Kelela dusts her song with innuendo and tension, her aching vocals existing between important answers with only her repetition of the song's title to keep her from overflowing.
CUT 4 ME drops October 1st on Fade To Mind.
