Absolutely Free’s “Clothed Woman, Sitting” is the Platonic Ideal of a slow burner, a patient, languidly layering space-rock epic that isn’t afraid to take its time to blow your mind. Strangely, it’s also the first song they ever wrote. Absolutely Free is comprised of four-fifths of former Toronto spazz-punks DD/MM/YYYY, a band whose hyper-stuffed compositions resisted riding an idea for ten seconds, let alone nine minutes. According to AF multi-instrumentalist Moshe Rozenberg, it was the influence of the song’s producer Mike Haliechuk, best known as a guitarist in Fucked Up.
“He reassured us not to worry about length, so with his feedback/influence we beefed up the intro by like two minutes,” Rozenberg says over email. “When we were younger, we’d cram too many ideas into a song and it’d sound like we were in a rush or something. Fuck that! Absolutely Free is quite comfortable to bathe in a groove.”
