Resignation for Heaven's Gate is still a destructive mode. At first, “Lex Vision” seems to smother the ring of fire that powered the New York post-punk band's previous songs, in favour of an insular and jangly sound. But even slightly adrift, the band still find new ways to punish, weaponizing their despair into an accusatory hook and extended instrumental stretches of collapsing fuzz. It's a nifty trick, exposing our vulnerabilities then leaving us with our thoughts. Transmuting is out next Tuesday on Inflated Records.
