Four Tet has recently mused on production work for RiFF RaFF, and “Parallel Jalebi” would have been an ideal instrumental to add dynamic to the Neon Icon's beat selection. Not that it needs Jody Highroller: the latest track from There Is Love In You is a gorgeous, translucent landscape where Kieren Hebden's hip-hop influence falls gently into focus around his distinct sound. His track is catapulted skyward by brain-buzzing kicks and lands with a single murky clap as arpeggiated notes puncture the track with the velocity of an accelerated steel press. Still, it's a Four Tet song, so it's not strictly anything: Looped female vocals float just above everything (yes, like angels) and glowing synths hum and ponder throughout the song's second half. It's not the first glance we've had at the massive collection of rap records that lives in both Four Tet's brain and house, but we're at a point when bandwagoneers have drained ethereal hip-hop's barely nascent spirituality. Four Tet has helped give it a little bit of life.
