Danny Brown has mentioned that the title of his upcoming album Old (out September 30th) is a shout-out to everyone from his hood that wants him to return to his J Dilla sound. “Side A (Old)” sounds nothing like a donut, but it is a throwback, specifically to Brown's time spent dealing crack. Grim electronics rip and sneer as Brown drops you right into his frigid trap house, in front of a ramen noodle dinner and a couple of loaded weapons. Detroit is obviously important to Danny Brown, so while representing it the best way he knows how is important, so is getting his people back home to accept that he's chosen his path for the right reasons. He's letting them know that he hasn't changed, even if the beats he raps on have. It's a reassurance. A real-assurance.
