All it takes is one choppy boat ride and a worried looking captain for you to realize that the ocean is nothing to be played with. And beneath the literally twinkling sound of Young Galaxy's “Sea Drug,” a macabre spirit lives, like the bones of sailors slowly turning into a beautiful coral reef: “Empty me out, like blood in the water/Bury my pieces on the sea floor.” But the Montreal band's pop charisma is still there; Driftwood guitars jangly away cheerfully, as the song alternates hot and cool, as welcome and refreshing as a cold cocktail glass against a sweaty neck. It's easy to float off into the song's aquamarine horizons. Just know that there could be venomous shrimps waiting to chew on your back. The Ultramarine deluxe edition is out September 24th on Paper Bag Records.
