You won't find a press photo of Tricky smiling. In almost all of them his face is either carved with a brutal glare, or shrouded by shadow or smog. It's a vibe that his music has attempted to capture ever since his breakout solo debut Maxinquaye, and Andy Stott helps it sound fresher than it has in years with a remix of “Valentine” from the trip-hop pioneer's latest LP False Idols. Stott's synths bloom darkly against a haunted industrial soundscape, its rattles and echos the residues of a romance Tricky is recounting, with his tried voice escaping through a snaggle toothed grin. We're dived into an anxious, shifting memory, where Francesca Belmonte's voice shifts into a stuttering migraine, pitching Stott's hip-hop into familiar techno realms. It's a perfect pairing and hopefully not the last. Get the vinyl at Boomkat on September 16th.
