R Plus 7, the title of Oneohtrix Point Never's upcoming album on Warp Records, evokes vague memories of equations and formulas high school maths classes. For most of us, they will never be anything more than acquaintances drilled into us by repetition for a brief, intense period, then left to some dusty, impossible region in our memories. Music (especially muzak) is the same, and “Zebra” is another one of Daniel Lopatin's ecstatic resurrections of the glossy sounds of yesterday's mall foyers. With punchy rave stabs, globs of kalimba notes and crystalline, saxophone-dusted expanses, each of his algoritihms sing with ecstasy, and that's always contemporary, no matter what edition of Windows your synth patch was used on. R Plus Seven is out September 30th on Warp Records.
