Tim Hecker is that rare ambient artist who is wildly successful in his vivid evocations of both earthly realms as well as fantastical ones the listener must ascribe surroundings to. “Virginal II,” the sixth song off his upcoming new album Virgins (out October 14th), does both. With creeping, anxious strings and waves of drone, the Quebec artist famous for his monolithic sound gives us the blueprint for something at once instinctually familiar and immutable. His own Cydonia. When a certain sonic cannot articulate the required feeling, it is dropped out, disappearing into the gorgeous scrum, perhaps to reemerge later. There's a temptation to refer to this and a portion of Tim Hecker's catalogue as noise, but that's misleading. Just because there aren't any totally quiet moments on “Virginal II” doesn't mean it's not still. Here and elsewhere, Tim Hecker makes his own silence.
