Jessy Lanza has no problem reconciling her hemispheres of bedroom pop experimentalist and pop superstar influence. But “5785021” seems to be about communication, and how it breaks down in the gap between two brains. Obvious signals - like planting your phone number in the song's title - go unanswered by the other party. “Why you wanna play me like a fool?” Lanza chides before breathily pleading “Call me” both with sultry self-awareness and played-up impassion. Pop gold, basically. She's spotlighted by the production, which minimally fills in her harmonic gaps with a jazzy flair that's always submissive to her presence. Pull My Hair Back is out September 9th on Hyperdub.
