Both Iceage and Lower thrive with fans of dangerous music because their music seems prone to explode and incinerate anyone in its path. Hailing from Portland, Hausu is also driven by a losing battle against a shapeshifting ennui, but their cataclysm on “Leaning Mess” is an inward one, threatening to consume just the band that's playing its garage rock indebted hardcore and wretchedly moaning their romantic ills. Even as the song repeatedly launches into panicked noise like a malfunctioning foundry, the sense that you're watching a break down, not a blow-up. The band's Total LP is out now on Hardly Art.
