“Thirteen Rocks and a bag of Weed” is Legowelt's first “Memphno” track, though he's no stranger to hybrid music. Under over a dozen different monikers, Danny Wolfers has been combining genres to suit his elusive, compulsively listenable ends. “Thirteen Rocks” is another such success because it exposes the synchronicity in two resurgent, sonically distant genres - Memphis hardcore rap and Detroit techno - and gives the sounds new life through collaboration. The production understands that it's not enough to simply wind the two sounds through an artist's mental tape deck in order to spit out something compelling. You have to introduce them, settle differences, embrace commonalities, make friends. The sounds crosshatch their creepiness and tag team their own versions of propulsive drums, sending the song far out of the realm of opportunistic mash-up and bridging a gap you never realized was there.
