Kilo Kish‘s new mixtape, from which “Creepwave” is taken, isn’t just a mixtape. It’s an audio/visual project that will include a gallery show on February 1st in New York, consisting of works-in-progress by artists including members of Odd Future. But yeah, it’s also a mixtape, and featured guests will include Earl Sweatshirt, the Internet, Childish Gambino, A$AP Ferg, Flatbush Zombies, SBTRKT, CRONOS, Star Slinger, Vince Staples, and Nick Hook. Get excited.
“Creepshow” has a gothic, confessional atmosphere, an entry in a leather-bound diary outlining an obsessive, destructive relationship. It feels like a Weeknd role reversal, written from the perspective of one of the his spurned lovers. But Kish is a rapper, and she’s speaking for all the females that are casually discarded in so many of her genre’s lyrics. It’s empowering, especially when the stiletto heels start tapping out the beat like soldiers heading to war, and throughout the song her lofty sigh helps to makes her a detached narrator, outlining a compelling plot and character that makes keeping up anything but a hassle. The bars from Flatbush Zombies don’t really add anything, other than the feeling that Kish is finally starting to get the respect within the industry that she deserves.
