You can't be sad at a party, but you can party to sad sounds. So goes Glam Shell's remix of Young Pharaohs “One The World,” originally a slanted post-Weeknd R&B downer, now a high-fashion trap-house paint-peeler. Sad sacks get booted out of the club this song conjures: polished glass walls, pristine couches, maybe Jeremy Scott hanging out in the corner. Lyrics like “If I can't be, then I don't wanna be anything” are swallowed up, their sadness cooly drained by ubiquitous, cloudy synths and those diamond-cutting 808 rolls, perhaps the defining percussive effect of the past two years. But there's nothing wrong with a party, so long as it's not reductive. And since Glam Shell isn't trend-baiting with these signifiers, we're more than happy to stand in line for two hours, hoping to get in.
