The first two minutes of William Tyler’s “Cadillac Desert” are (for me, anyway) a sobering reminder that shoegaze doesn’t own the copyrights on window-rattling distorted bass. But it’s all a bit of cunning misdirection, though; the dirty buzz soon gets dissolved by dainty acoustic jangles and it’s associate, a heavenly pedal-steel guitar. It’s such an unexpectedly perfect combination that the rare mistake helps break down any feeling of calculation and heightens the ecstasy.
