In late November, Japanese house-funk duo BenZel burst through a crowded field with a cover of “If You Love Me,” which featured chanteuse-of-the-moment Jessie Ware on vocals. No artist wants to be defined by who they collaborate with, and had BenZel sat on the cracking tune for a few months that very well could have happened. But they’ve smartly leaked “Fallin’ Love,” a demo of a new song that’s constructed on the rhythms of living and making love. Endearing in its balance of unmanicured and polished elements (which hopefully won’t disappear from the final version) the song glides between rapturous, pitch-shifted hip-hop babble and a sweaty afterglow funk. Unlike “If You Love Me,” it’s a song about reciprocated affection, and so invites the listener to participate in the ecstasy rather than just gaze in tortured awe.
