Earlier this year, Cass McCombs released “Bradley Manning,” a tribute to the imprisoned Marine and alleged WikiLeaker who spent the last year or two being tortured by the US government. “Empty Promises” is that song’s bookish, coffee-scented B-side, a considerably more fun piece of phased-out psychedelic folk. It may not be as politically fiery as its A-side, but the tranquil pace and golden vibe masks the same sort of anxious urgency. Listen below:
