Big Boi‘s flirtation with independent synth-pop-inflected rap began with “Mama Told Me,” a huge grin of a track that originally featured Little Dragon. But “Lines” is his most successful convergence of the two genres, one that brings the same futuristic rap ethos to indie pop as “Shutterbug” did to funk. But this one isn’t a solo affair: A$AP Rocky delivers another reliably great verse, and Sarah Barthel of electro duo Phantogram brings some Imogen Heap style flair to the radio-melting hook. Tracks like these are a sobering reminder that maybe Andre 3000 wasn’t the most unconventionally creative member of Outkast.
Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumours is out December 11th via Def Jam.
