Gil-Scot Heron’s “New York Is Killing Me” is a song of anguish and decay, while Angel Haze‘s triumphant remix made her sound like the ruler over some fast rotting kingdom. Now King Krule‘s using her verse for his own rework of “New York,” a much less abrasive and foggier version that adds an air of wry confidence to Angel Haze’s aggressive flow and glides on pulse-perfect R&B percussion. It’s a fascinating case study of how an altered instrumental can improve a rapper’s verse while the words remain exactly the same.
