The Flaming Lips – “God Only Knows” (Beach Boys cover)
So insanely prolific it would be overwhelming or boring if it weren’t all so goddamn interesting, The Flaming Lips continue their reign by covering the venerable “God Only Knows” for Mojo, which with Coyne and crew feels like it might’ve actually been recorded in space while they chilled the fuck out with God. It’s haunting, crackly, and marks another notch on the proverbial belt for the Lips.
Jonathan Boulet – “This Song is Called Ragged”
Bouncing and exuberant, Jonathan Boulet’s “This Song is Called Ragged” is almost too much to handle, what with all the marimbas, chants, breakdowns and cathartic choruses. It’s so bright and beaming, it’ll probably require you to be slathered in sunscreen, donning a bucket hat and several sets of sunglasses to enjoy properly. I have sensitive skin.
Blackbird Blackbird – “Waikiki”
Beginning with a few quick knocks on wood, Blackbird Blackbird’s “Waikiki” sounds like it’s tapping on your brain asking you, “Hey, do you want to listen to listen to some nice glowing, plinking sounds that wrap around your head?” And, you should be all like, “Yeah, sure, why not?” Because, seriously, why not?
Mykki Blanco – “Wavvy”
Drag queen’s Mykki Blanco’s efforts to become a top rate and openly gay male rapper are noble, but they could do more harm than good if he lacks skill. But listen to “Wavvy” his grimy, radio-ready anthem that mixes four drink in club ignorance and complex, unique metaphors. It’s the kind of fierce, unapologetically song that rap fans wish Nikki Minaj would exclusively record.
