Wow, Jill Barber took a ride in the way-back machine to 1953 or so with this one. That's no joke. This record sounds like something recorded before rock 'n' roll existed. Unfortunately, in a world where Amy Winehouse's post-millennial angst (and crack-fucked-upness) adds an edge to her retro revival soul, the lack of a similar tension with Barber's work makes her feel comparably vanilla.
