Time Capsule: Jan. 9, 1963

Charlie Watts (far left in the publicity shot) joined The Rolling Stones as their new drummer 46 years ago.
Watts was previously the drummer for Blues Incorporated, whose members at various times included Cream's Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker and Long John Baldry. Ironically, he left the band in 1963 because he was tired of its busy schedule.
He worked in an advertising firm for a while until The Rolling Stones convinced him to join the band.

Watts is best known for his jazz-influenced style, and he's also released several of his own solo jazz records. He also designed the album cover for 1967's Between The Buttons (pictured, right).
Watts is married to Shirley Ann Shepherd. The couple have one daughter, Serephina Watts, who is now 41 years old.
