I own an iPod, but for the most part I don't use it and stubbornly cling to my nearly 10-year-old Discman. I listen to a different album every day on the old clunker, and here's today's:
While I don't think it's as much of a complete brain-fuck as Axis: Bold As Love (the first time I heard "EXP" I thought something was wrong with my stereo), Are You Experienced? is still one of my favourite albums.
I can remember listening to the radio on my Walkman as an 11-year-old child with a paper route and "Purple Haze" came on. I chuckled because it sounded like Hendrix was singing, "Excuse me while I kiss this guy." I didn't "mishear" it, but I thought it was hilarious anyway. Apparently I'm not the only one who thinks this.
Later, in first year university, I bought a new guitar and spent hours and hours sitting on my dorm room floor with this album in my CD player, trying to figure out all the songs by ear. Trying is the key part of that sentence.
Release date: Aug. 23, 1967 (May 12, 1967 in U.K.)
Producer: Chas Chandler
