Britney Spears at the VMAs... Take Two?

The loveably self-destructive Britney Spears seems to be at it again -- literally. The disastrous blonde bombshell recently filmed two spots for this year's MTV Video Music Awards with host Russell Brand (he was great in Forgetting Sarah Marshall), hinting that she might return for Round 2 of what was maybe the most horrendous television performance ever.
Remember?:
Yeah, it was bad. Yes, she has a new album in the works and it's her self-proclaimed "best work ever" (oh boy…), and yes, she's trying to clean up her image from all of her craziness, with her dad taking over her estate… But I don't know if returning to the scene of the crime will remove this performance from everyone's memory.
I feel bad for the girl. I think if I grew up too soon as some sort of school-girl sex symbol in popular culture with way too much money being thrown at me, I'd be messed up too. She obviously has little to no sense of reality, which isn't entirely her fault (and which she isn't totally absolved from either -- I get that -- but you know what I mean… when you've got so many industry people with dollar signs for eyes pushing you)… It's a bad situation.
And I don't know if this performance will get her "music career" (I use the term loosely) back on track. It definitely won't have the same impact. Last year, people were looking for "Britney's comeback" and were then totally shocked to see what was actually "coming back": the blankly staring, barely moving, less-than-fit Brit. I think this year, if it does actually happen, viewers will be tuning in for a laugh to see how messed up she is. Even if she gives the performance of her life, I don't think the audience will care. That's not the Britney they're tuning in to see anymore.
More laughable moments from the recent OK! Magazine interview with Britney:
"That was special, but it was also strange, because she's always been the baby, and now the baby was having a baby. It was mind-boggling. I was shocked a little bit. But it was really cool, and she was happy." (Spears talking about lil' sis Jamie Lynn)
"I'm writing every day, right here at the piano." (Spears talking about... songwriting? Really? Does anyone actually believe that?!)
