The Hack Hit The Hockey Summit Of The Arts This Weekend

The ChartAttack Hack Hockey Club will be getting down at the 11th annual Hockey Summit Of The Arts this weekend, April 10-12, in Toronto.

This collision of hockey and art will feature 38 teams of musicians, actors, media riff-raff and other assorted ankle-biters from across the nation competing on the ice, on the stage, and, new this year, at the fine art of bubble hockey.

The Hack will be heavily involved in all three days and nights of the tournament.

On the ice The Hack will be facing a noxious set of opponents, the Niagara Crystal Beach Comets, the Claremont Cougars and the Montreal Ninja Tune Wicked Deadly Karate Chop, a team who Polaris Music Prize winner Patrick Watson used to play goal for.

The Friday and Saturday round robin and semi-final rounds of the tourney playoffs will be held at Canlan Ice Sports – York University (989 Murray Ross Parkway), between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. each night.

Coming out to Back The Hack at these games is strongly encouraged:

Friday, April 10, 12:30 p.m., Rink C vs. Claremont Cougars

Friday, April 10, 4:30 p.m., Rink D vs. Montreal Ninja Tune Wicked Deadly Karate Chop

Saturday, April 11, 1:15 p.m., Rink F vs. Niagara Crystal Beach Comets

The Summit finals will be held at De La Salle Arena (131 Farnham Ave.) on the Sunday. Admission to all the weekend games is free, but a donation to the Daily Bread Food Bank is encouraged.

Of course, that's only half the fun. Every team will also be fighting on the artistic battlefield as well.

Each night, from 9 p.m. 'til 2 a.m. teams will reconfigure into bands Voltron-style to rock out at the El Mocambo (464 Spadina Ave., $10 cover... this event will sell out). Members of Sloan, C'mon, Rheostatics and White Cowbell Oklahoma are just a very small sampling of the Can-rockers set to perform with their various teams.

Sadly, the Hack won't be fielding a band this year because we were so awesome last year that we won the whole thing and have to sit out and act as judges (google "The Hackatistas" for crumbs). However, you'll still be able to watch us heckle the performers Muppets-style from the side stage as well as bask in the witty repartee of Hack members and MCs for the weekend, George Stroumboulopoulos of The Hour, Darrin Pfeiffer of the band Goldfinger and 102.1 The Edge, and The Weather Network on-air personality and active nudist, Tim Bolen.
