What The Filk?!

Holy shit!
I just discovered something called filk music existed and that there's a big conference called Filkontario — "Canada's first science fiction folk festival" — happening on April 3-5, 2009 in Toronto.
I'm entranced.
Who are these people that gather at these things? What do they look like? And how, as a rock critic, owner of every proper Led Zeppelin album on vinyl, and former Dungeon Master, has this escaped me for this many years? Are they really that high a level on the secret society nerd-out tip?
Apparently the biggest dudes in this scene are Ookla The Mok. Check out this video of them playing one of their nerd songs:
