Song Of The Day: The Meligrove Band's "Bones Attack!!!"

The Meligrove Band's "Bones Attack!!!" is absolutely infectious indie pop from one of Toronto's most underrated bands. The tune, which features a chorus that's as catchy as flu (but less nasty for you), includes a vibraphone part written by Rich Aucoin, who recorded it in Halifax and emailed it to the band.

The tune will be found on The Meligrove Band's Shimmering Lights album, which is out Sept. 21 through Nevado Records. It's their first record since 2006's Planets Conspire.

Video Of The Day: New Found Glory's "Truck Stop Blues"

New Found Glory take over a bizarre 24-hour truck stop in their video for "Truck Stop Blues," which is full of quirky animations, a girl with a gas mask on her face, a crazy guy wearing a poncho and more. It's so weird, in fact, that bassist Ian Grushka can't handle it and runs off into the desert Looney Tunes style when he hallucinates animated heads on his bandmates.

Song Of The Day: Great Lake Swimmers' "Ballad Of A Fisherman's Wife"

Given their name, it's only appropriate Great Lake Swimmers wrote "Ballad Of A Fisherman's Wife." They composed it in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon BP oil rig oil spill in the Gulf Of Mexico, which happened in April. The tune is about farmers and fishers who depend on waterbodies for their livelihood, which is incredibly appropriate considering how people living on the U.S. Gulf coast have been devastated by the oil spill.

The song will benefit Swim Drink Fish Music, an online initiative developed by Lake Ontario's Waterkeeper and other Canadian Waterkeeper organizations. The organization works with artists to produce music that will help benefit water conservation.

You can download "Ballad Of A Fisherman's Wife" through Swim Drink Fish Music's website.

Silversun Pickups Explain Life On The Bus

What do Mad Max and Silversun Pickups have in common? They're both road warriors. The only difference between the two, is Mad Max didn't roll in a sweet tour bus. Other than that, they're identical.

The California four-piece have two tours coming in the fall: one in Australia and one they can't talk about.

CHARTattack sat down with drummer Christopher Guanlao while the band were on tour with Against Me! to discuss writing a new album, their love for comedy television and their obsession with The Room.

CHARTattack: Folk punk meets shoegaze. How did you hook up with Against Me! for this tour?
Christopher Guanlao: We saw them over the years. We've played with them at a bunch of festivals here and there. We love their energy and their songs are cool. So when it came time to pick [another band] and their name came up, we all immediately agreed we wanted them.

Are you guys noticing a different set of fans showing up on this tour that haven't in the past?
Not too much. [Against Me!] definitely have a contingency of people there, but then it seems like by the time we get on stage, they become fans of us, too. It's not a weird thing at all. The crowds have been great for both bands.

Swoon came out in April 2009. Are there plans to follow that up anytime soon?
There's definitely plans. We've got a couple tours after this, one in Australia and one we can't talk about yet 'cause it's not confirmed.

We might take winter off and maybe start working on it next year. We probably won't take too much time off, though; just a month. We get pretty ansty during time off.

Are you guys writing while on the road?
There's little stuff here and there, but we haven't even really started seriously thinking about songs yet. We're not multi-taskers. We like our time off on the road; it kind of keeps us sane. We love playing shows — it's what we live for — but as far as the off time, we like to chill out and watch TV.

So you guys don't go out much while touring?
Sometimes we'll go to bars if they're close by, but a lot times we have a one o'clock bus call to leave for the next city. So if there's a bar within walking distance we'll do that. If not we'll just hang out on the bus and just chill out.

Brian's a big movie buff, I'm a big movie buff. Yesterday we had a double feature of District 9 and Tropic Thunder. It was a bit weird. Nikki likes to start dance parties on the bus, so sometimes, if you get us in the right mood and someone puts on Lady Gaga, it's over. Everybody's jumping up and down and hanging from the ceiling.

Lady Gaga? Sweet. What's the band's biggest guilty pleasure?
I think all of us like Lady Gaga, but I don't know if that's a guilty pleasure any more. Maybe a year ago, but now everyone kinda thinks she's badass.

I guess a guilty pleasure would be Ke$ha. That's definitely a guilty pleasure. When I first heard that "Tik Tok" song, I thought, "What the hell is this? This is horrible." And then I got into it a little bit. And now, if you throw that on during one of our dance parties… (laughs) But we won't admit that readily.

What TV shows are you into?
We're big nerds so we got into Band Of Brothers and then The Pacific. I just got into Summer Heights High. That guy, Chris Lilly, is amazing. And East Bound Down. So funny.

Oh! And movies, you've gotta watch The Room. We've watched it four nights in a row. We just couldn't stand it. They show it monthly in L.A. and apparently the director goes to screenings and answers questions afterward. It's so bad. That's our big thing now. In fact, we had to back away from it for a bit because we were watching it every night. It was taking over.

Song Of The Day: Deer Tick's "Piece By Piece, Frame By Frame"

Providence, R.I.'s Deer Tick recorded their third album, The Black Dirt Sessions, during the same time as 2009's Born On Flag Day at New York's Black Dirt Studios. The disc came out in June.

"Piece By Piece, Frame By Frame" takes singer/guitarist John McCauley's gritty voice and folk guitar and places them against gentle piano. That kind of juxtaposition would be jarring if it wasn't for the album's subjects, which range from the existence of God to death. The essence of Deer Tick is that there's beauty in everything gritty.

Video Of The Day: Two Hours Traffic's "Happiness Burns"

When I was little, running through a forest, getting covered in mud, throwing water balloons at my friends, hanging out in hammocks, BMX biking through creeks, putting face paint on and making tree forts was my idea of pure happiness, as it is for most kids.

I would totally be in on the water balloon fight in this video, even though I'm in my twenties now. Two Hours Traffic are clearly into it as well, considering Alec O'Hanley's creative use of a guitar at the end of his clip.

Luke Doucet's World Includes Joy Division And Gordon Lightfoot

When Luke Doucet held a release party for his new album Steel City Trawler there was Steamwhistle beer, whisky sour shots, oysters and the likes of Brendan Canning of Broken Social Scene in the audience taking in Doucet and his band The White Falcon playing their 11 new songs.

Flash back to the fall of 2009 and I had the privilege to spend a few days in the studio with Doucet while he was putting the finishing touches on this record. The disc, which is a "tip of the hat to Steeltown," was mostly cut at John Dinsmore's Lincoln County Social Club in Liberty Village and was produced by Sloan's Andrew Scott. The record was put on the shelf for a few months while Doucet and wife Melissa McLelland toured this summer as part of Sarah MacLachlan's band for Lilith Fair.

Hamilton, Sloan, a Canadian folk icon, and a 1980s Brit-pop eccentric all found their way onto this follow up to the critically-acclaimed Blood's Too Rich (2008). Steel City Trawler oozes rock and soul — harking back to the classics such as The Rolling Stones, Neil Young And Crazy Horse and Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers.

Here is Doucet's dissection of a couple of the tracks on Steel City Trawler:

On cover songs:
I have a classic-rock attitude towards covers. It's a good way to end the set and keep up the energy… more important, it's a really good way to raise the bar on your own songwriting. You're playing classics and you can't help but notice your own songs wilt by comparison.

Why he chose Gordon Lightfoot's "Sundown" to cover:
You know how when you hear a song in your mind's eye and then you hear the actual recording they aren't always the same? Think about Neil Young's "Down By The River." In my head, it's a huge, rock 'n' roll thing, but then when you listen to the actual recording it's a fair bit humbler. "Sundown" was another one of those songs where I imagined it in my head to be a big song; it is a big song, but it's not a big recording, it's also fairly humble. In my head, I had it like a Crazy Horse song. Initially I thought, "Let's play this song live. Wouldn't that be a fun way to end the set?"

There was a tribute to Gordon Lightfoot at Nathan Philips Square [in Toronto] a few years ago and I did "Early Morning Rain." That was my first real exposure to Lightfoot because I didn't grow up with him. My parents were listening to The Band, Dylan, Neil Young and Tom Waits, but they weren't listening to Lightfoot. After I was asked to do this tribute, I started to listen to a bunch of his records and immediately fell in love with his songwriting. The funny thing about that gig is that [folk veteran] Brent Titcomb was at that event and I turned around to look at him backstage while I was singing "Early Morning Rain"; Brent had this look on his face like he had seen a ghost. Afterwards I asked him, "Hey man, what's going on? You look a little thrown off?" And he said, "Do you have any idea how much you look like Gordon Lightfoot?"

It never occurred to me, but there was this connection. I love discovering or unearthing a love affair between myself and another artist that I wasn't aware of. I have huge black holes in my music listening and I'm just trying to fill them in once in a while.

On Joy Division and "The Ballad Of Ian Curtis":
I saw two films: the Anton Corbijn film Control and then another bio-doc about Joy Division in the space of two days and they made an impression on me. Ian Curtis is a compelling figure… not compelling in the sense I don't think I would have liked him or his music, but compelling in that if he had been a sculptor or a race car driver, I probably would have still written a song about him just because the films I saw cast a light on an interesting person. After I recorded the song I read the bio that his wife wrote. She doesn't paint a very flattering picture. I was running and had seen these films and had Joy Division music running around in my head and by the time I got home I had written this song. I went to junior high in Winnipeg in the mid-'80s. I was at a preppy school where the preppy girls all had sweet smelling perfume, so when I think about music from that era I think of the preppy kids who were listening to Joy Division, The Cure, New Order, etc… all that post-industrial maudlin British pop. So, when I hear that music today, it reminds me of being in junior high. There's a sort of nostalgia that went with it.

Song Of The Day: Violent Kin's "Velvet Hideout"

Violent Kin continue with the punky dance rock that marked their 2009 Bitter Blood debut album with their new EP, Velvet Hideout, except this time they've thrown in even more over-the-top elements. The EP's full of Genesis-esque dance rock, and is one step away from being prog.
