NEWFOUNDLAND'S BRAZILIAN INFLUENCE

Jag
Jag Tanna

There's a different use of rhythm on it, as well. More African and Brazilian influence, as opposed to the Latin on previous recordings. What did that grow from?

Brian: Me being from Newfoundland.

Jag: Big Brazilian influence out there [laughs]. We've always been into Latin music, my brother [IME drummer Christian Tanna] and me. So when we got the band started that was a definite direction. We take it really seriously. We don't just throw some guy on who doesn't know how to play bongos, or something, and go, "Okay, hit them right there." We find guys who seriously know their instruments. [This time] we were really looking to get into Brazilian rhythms and the African stuff. We listened to a lot of Peter Gabriel, I think.

Brian: It's actually funny, because I thought it was just a surface, just percussion, whatever. Then when I came into it... they [Jag and Chris] know the name of every single rhythm that was ever invented.

Jag: It's a science. With Latin stuff, every little bell, every little pattern, has a name to it. You have to be able to communicate and talk about it. When you get involved with heavy guys playing... For me, producing the record, I wanna be able to talk to them about it. I don't wanna just go, "Go like this!" That's Guns 'N' Roses percussion. We take it very seriously. Most people don't know that, but we do.

Brian: I was impressed.

Jag: If you're going to get someone to play organ, I want someone who's really been around, knows it inside and out.

Brian: Someone who works in a church or something.
