I Mother Earth in '99: (l-r)Brian, Christian, Bruce and Jag |
Jag Tanna isn't worried if you don't like his new album right away; in fact, he seems to expect that you won't. That isn't because he thinks that I Mother Earth's new album is shite - it's because Blue Green Orange is packed so densely with information that it has the gravitational pull of a black hole: The closer one gets, the less likely are one's chances of escape. Weeks after release of this, their third record, the band reflected on the pressure - or lack of pressure - of releasing such an anticipated album.
There were a lot of expectations surrounding your latest record, in terms of fan acceptance, sales, that sort of thing. How did the band feel about the album while you wrote it?
Jag Tanna (guitarist): We felt good even after we wrote two songs. We knew we were on to something. We just sort of finished up the record and we didn't have any pressure; it either sucked or it didn't.
Brian Byrne (vocalist): It's definitely going to sell more than I've ever sold.
Jag: Brian, he's coming from zero.
Brian: It came to a point where we all relaxed. We're happy with end result.
Were there people with a cynical, negative attitude towards you after you lost Edwin as your vocalist?
Jag: Industry people who are really cynical, they're, like, "Oh, you should change your name..." And we're, like, "You know what? You can suck my dick, and we we're just going to go ahead." They don't know - but the fans know, and they're the ones we're playing for. Not for some guy working at some company; he can kiss my ass. And now we've got the record.
In what ways is this record different from Scenery And Fish?
Jag: This one has more subtlety to it, I think.
