Ten Questions With Our Lady Peace's Duncan Coutts

Duncan Coutts

We here at CHARTattack learned a great deal about Our Lady Peace bassist Duncan Coutts' likes and dislikes when we sat down to ask him 10 mostly "either/or" questions at the end of 2009.

We wonder if Coutts' convictions about the killer whale totally whooping the giant squid have further been solidified by happened at Sea World last week? (We're totally on the killer whale's side.)

CHARTattack: Leafs or Habs?
Duncan Coutts: "Leafs, I'm a masochist."

Which is a more iconic Canadian song: the Littlest Hobo theme song or "The Log Driver's Waltz"?
I'll have to go with "The Log Driver's Waltz."

Who's the best band in Canadian music currently?
[Laughing] I can't say us, even though I'd like to. We played with Mother Mother, I thought they were really cool.

What's your favourite Canadian record of all time?
I grew up with [Neil Young's] Harvest, that's my childhood. But I learned to play bass to [Rush's] YYZ. With an honourable mention to [Rush's] Moving Pictures.

Who's the worst band in music, period?
The Wiggles.

Who wins in a fight, a giant squid or a killer whale?
Killer whale.

Who wins in a fight, Edwin or Greig Nori?
[Laughing] I'd have to go with Greig Nori. You're not going to keep Greig Nori down.

Who's a better Jacob Two Two adversary — the dinosaur or the hooded fang?
Hooded Fang.

What do you miss most about home when you're on the road?
The mundane stuff that you take for granted — being able to make your own coffee, and my kids, obviously.

What are you looking most looking forward to on your upcoming tour?
Doing something different that we've never done before — we've never played an album in its entirety. We've always tried to stretch our music, and it's the same thing, just live.
