Dragonette: The Next Big Thing And You Don't Even Know It

Dragonette

One part Canadian, the other part British, Dragonette are proclaiming themselves a "truly modern band." Tying together loose ends of punk, rock, electro, pop and singer-songwriter lyricism, the show-stopping foursome led by Toronto's once solo "tampon music" — playing Martina Sorbara have been ready to pack dance floors and sex you up for a while. They've just been waiting for people to catch up.

"When our album was done and the first big label said they were gonna put us out there, we had all this press saying 'Next Big Thing!' and we were like, 'OK, but nobody knows who we are,'" says Sorbara.

"It was sort of like, well OK, if the record company says we're huge, then…" drummer Joel Stouffer drifts off.

"I think now finally we're feeling the buzz catching up," Sorbara continues, before Stouffer jokingly adds, "Yeah, finally the audiences are catching up to where we thought we already were."

With guitarist Will Stapleton rumoured to be dating Lily Allen (he says it's not true), The New Deal's Dan Kurtz handling synths and guitars for the first time, and a brand new Boogie Nights porn-themed video for "Take It Like A Man," the buzz is seriously getting hard to ignore.
