The Blood Lines: Using Family Ties To Advantage

Saskatchewan's The Blood Lines haven't been around long, but they've already accomplished a lot. The fittingly-named quartet — made up of siblings Maygan and S.J Kardash and Paul and Barrett Ross — recently took home the Western Canadian Music Award for outstanding rock recording for their self-titled 2006 debut album.

Keyboardist Maygan attributes the rapid success to the lineage between their members.

"We didn't have to develop the brother-sister relationship that most bands end up having," she says. "It's actually really natural. I think it makes it a lot
easier to discuss why we like things because we each know the theory of why we should be going to the fourth on this or why we should be going to a bridge right then."

The artsy rock of The Blood Lines feels equally as natural when listened to, and though a band consisting of two sets of siblings has chemistry, Kardash admits it's not always without complications.

"Sometimes when we're arguing it seems like the families are fighting against each other," she says with a laugh. "But the benefits so outweigh any sibling squabbles that I wouldn't even really classify them as drawbacks."
