NXNE 2014 Report Cards

NXNE ’14 Report Cards: Who Took Top Marks?

Between all the debate about the role of the festival itself, we managed to review 29 shows. Here are our grades, arranged from highest to lowest.

- Jun 23, 2014

It's been a whirlwind week for us and NXNE. Before we started our extensive coverage of the citywide music festival we wondered if NXNE was losing touch with the Toronto music scene. The pervasive criticisms of high ticket prices, overt corporate sponsorship and, most troublingly, the 45-day radius clause that was sacrificing emerging local musicians to the rivalry between NXNE and CMW, were the subtext of everything we saw this past week. By Friday, the backlash was furious and the higher-ups responded, lifting the radius clause for next year's festival.

Between all this we actually did manage to catch a few shows. 29 of them, to be exact. And barring a couple of surprising disappointments (Rhye at Massey Hall), blatant stunts (The Pizza Underground playing a moving ad for MIO) and meltdowns (Perfect Pussy's aural protest), most of it was good! So let's forget the controversy for a minute and relive the exhausting week of music. Here are our NXNE Report Cards, organized from highest marks to lowest.
