It’s true that in Monday’s NETDUMP we wrote that you only spend your valuable time watching one Whitney Houston tribute, but the Internet has since exploded with mashups, acapellas, and various other musical eulogies that are honest appreciations of her music. So rather than make the presumption of telling you what’s best, we thought we’d post them all and let you decide. Though the first one we posted is actually the best.
Whitney Houston’s original “How Will I Know?” isolated vocal track
Though it would be pretty eerie if Houston sang every song actually believing it to be her last, you could make the case for that after hearing the solo voice track for “How Will I Know?” By removing the pop from from one of her biggest pop hits, we’re left to judge the strength of Housten’s voice on its own (after being produced, equalized and mixed, of course), and it is still a thing of wonder.
The Hood Internet – When The Night Knows (Whitney Houston vs. Chromeo)
The Hood Internet – When The Night Knows (Whitney Houston x Chromeo) by hoodinternet
The Hood Internet are known for their club-centric remixes that combine seemingly disparate songs into outrageous bangers. However, matching the Queen of ’80s pop with a group whose entire sound is rooted in that time isn’t particularly risky, but nevertheless it’s a pleasing and familiar combination that will give a sense just how much of Houston’s music informed the trendsetters of today.
Sebastien Grainger – “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” (MIDI cover)
I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY by Sebastien Grainger
Right after Jennifer Hudson brought down the house at the Grammys, Death From Above 1979 drummer Sebastien Grainger dropped his own eulogy to the late singer, a deceptively simple midi rework of one of Whitney’s signature tunes. You’ll be surprised at how much of the original’s universal appeal comes through, despite the potential burden posed by the abudance of monosynths and memories of old PC games.
AIDS-3D – Whitney Houston Dirge (Live at Times Feb 11 2012)
Whitney Houston Dirge (Live at Times Feb 11 2012) by aids-3d
In a move that should make it clear just how crazy it is that the Internet exists, Berlin-based artist collective AIDS 3D were able to create this remix of Houston’s most famous the song the night she died, and perform it live. The result has enough chopped-up-not-slopped-up ghostliness to make you constantly check your closet for spirits, but powerful enough that you’ll happily invite them into your room if they actually are there.
Twista – Whitney Houston Tribute
Twista once held the Guiness World Record for “Fastest Rapper” (real category, though the actual title is probably different), though if his raps were anything the ones in this “tribute”, they’re probably best left undeciphered. His heart’s in the right place, but dude could have used an editor: The entire thing reads like something a hip hop Michael Scott would write, blaming Houston’s mother and daughter for doing anything to prevent her death, just before shutting up for 16 bars so any rapper that wants to be a part of this awkward mess can do so.
Zooash – Dancing in Houston (Robyn vs. Whitney)
Robyn vs Whitney Houston – Dancing in Houston (Zooash ”Glam-Pop” Mashup) – supported by EARMILK.com by Zooash
Perhaps one of the reasons why Robyn has such a dedicated fanbase is that they recognize that she has the same intense dedication to the medium of pop as artists like Whitney. Houston’s “How Will I Know?” gets combined with “Dancing On My Own”, both songs that deal with the disturbing potential of unrequited love, with the instrumental beating a mournful electronic groove as Houston sings about how she’s at once enamored and terrified.
