How many bands from Winnipeg can you name? If you said Propagandhi and The Weakerthans, you should think back a bit further to the city's most popular group of the early '90s. That would be the Crash Test Dummies, whose former guitar, mandolin and harmonica player, Benjamin Darvill, is now a blues-based artist who goes by the stage name Son Of Dave. He'll release his fourth album, 03, on Aug. 12 through Toronto's Sparks Music.
Darvill now lives in London, England, where he co-produced 03 with Alex McGowan (The Future Shape Of Sound, Tricky) and Bacon & Quarmby (Richard Hawley, Josh Ritter). It features an expanded sound with guitar, piano, organ, cello and backing vocals added to the staple looping harmonica, beat box and foot stomps. The album includes a cover of War's "Low Rider." You can hear "Your Mercedes Intro" and "Old Times Were Good Times" on Son Of Dave's MySpace page.
Son Of Dave's B. Darvill's Wild West Show debut came out in 1999. He followed it with 2000's 01 and 2006's 02. The new album has been out in the U.K. since April.
Although Son Of Dave never officially left Crash Test Dummies, he hasn't appeared on a Dummies album since 1999's Give Yourself A Hand. The Dummies haven't released an album since 2004's Songs Of The Unforgiven.
Here's what's on 03:
