Charty Chart Chat: Crystal Castles Don't Vacate #1 Wednesday May 07, 2008 @ 05:00 PM By: ChartAttack.com Staff
Last week the Chart staff (OK, just me) went on vacation, as I'm apt to do once in a while. Since I don't yet have a robotic/computer-driven replacement, no charts were posted last week. But due to my unfailing desire to record the week-to-week comings and goings on all of the Canadian campus radio charts, I did a bit of backtracking and recreated the six charts that I would have done if I hadn't been on vacation. This column deals with the charts for the week ending April 25. A second Charty Chart Chat two days from now will cover the charts from last week.
There were only five new entries in the top 50, below the usual average of seven to 10 per week. But the albums already on the chart were surprisingly active, especially near the top. Outside of Crystal Castles' self-titled release at #1, Constantines' Kensington Heights at #2 and the flip-flopping of Plants And Animals' Parc Avenue at #3 and Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds' Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! at #4, the rest of the top 10 showed lots of turbulence. Woodhands' Heart Attack jumps five spots to #5. HILOTRONS' Happymatic rises seven places to #6 and Duchess Says' Anthologie Des 3 Perchoirs moves up seven spots to #7 while jumping past Los Campesinos!' Hold On Now, Youngster..., which rises three places to #8. Man Man's Rabbit Habits hops up three spots to #9. The Black Keys' Attack & Release drops three notches to #10.
 Mahogany Frog Do5 |
It was only a five-horse race for the Chart Sizzler Award, but at least none of the contenders needed to be euthanized at the end of the contest. Winning the coveted CSA by a head was Mahogany Frog's independently released Mahogany Frog Do 5 at #30. Ghost Bees' Tasseomancy places at #34 and Foals' Antidotes shows at #41. The other two debuts are Jonathan Richman's Because Her Beauty Is Raw And Wild at #44 and The Long Blondes' "Couples" at #49. There were several big movers within the top 50, as Tapes 'N Tapes' Walk It Off jumps 25 places to #24, The Raconteurs' Consolers Of The Lonely rises 19 positions to #31 and Clinic's Do It! vaults up 14 spots to #14.
 Daxaar |
Three of the five specialty charts have the same #1 albums as last week. Cursed's III: Architects Of Troubled Sleep remains at #1 on the Metal/Punk chart for a second week. Crystal Castles' eponymous release tops the Electronic chart for a sixth week, while Cadence Weapon's Afterparty Babies has ruled the Hip-Hop top 10 for nine weeks. Steve Reid Ensemble's Daxaar returns to #1 on the Jazz/Blues chart after previously holding that position for two weeks in March. The Umalali: Garifuna Women's Project compilation, which held the #1 spot on the World/Folk chart for the first two of weeks of April, returns there again.
Buck 65's Situation remains on the Hip-Hop chart at #8. This gives it 22 weeks on the chart, besting the 21-week specialty chart longevity record it set the previous week.
