Gnarls Barkley pulled a fast one on Tuesday when digital copies of their sophomore release, The Odd Couple, hit iTunes and the band announced that hard copies of the album would arrive in stores on March 25.
The Odd Couple was originally due out on April 8. A message on the duo's official website says they felt the timing was "right to just go for it… With the shifting seasons, furtive romantic entanglements and fierce college basketball rivalries, the latter half of March can be confusing. People need to be soothed and inspired now."
Well, there's that, and the fact that The Odd Couple leaked onto the internet a couple of weeks back.
Albums being leaked online and traded for free weeks or months before their scheduled releases is enough to drive many artists crazy, and some are doing something about it with surprise launches. The Raconteurs announced yesterday that their sophomore album, Consolers Of The Lonely, would be issued on March 25. The band purposely kept a lid on the album's release to avoid leaks.
Gnarls Barkley consist of DJ/producer Danger Mouse (real name Brian Burton) and Goodie Mob member and solo artist Cee-Lo. Danger Mouse is known for his Danger Doom collaborations with MF Doom and The Grey Album, his infamous remix of The Beatles' White Album and Jay-Z's The Black Album. He's also worked with Gorillaz and is slated to collaborate on Beck's next album.
Gnarls Barkley released their Grammy Award-winning St. Elsewhere debut in 2006. "Run" is the first single/video from The Odd Couple. It will be followed by "Who's Gonna Save My Soul."
Here are the tracks on The Odd Couple:
