Joel Plaskett To Showcase Old Albums In Toronto Concert Series

Joel Plaskett Emergency
Joel Plaskett Emergency

Joel Plaskett Emergency's five night stand at Toronto's Legendary Horseshoe Tavern in celebration of the venue's 60th anniversary is already one of the most anticipated musical events of the winter, but things just got even cooler. In perhaps the greatest Plaskett-related concept performances since Thrush Hermit barreled through a set of Steve Miller Band covers at an Edgefest in 1995, The Emergency are set to tackle a different album from the Plaskett back catalogue at each of the shows.

Things kick off on Monday, December 10 with songs from the band's debut album In Need Of Medical Attention. This will be a great chance to relive the early days of The Emergency, when everyone was sorta sad and bitter about the demise of Thrush Hermit, but couldn't deny the beauty of songs like "I'd Rather Be Deadly Than Dead" and " and "She Made A Wreck Outta Me."

The next night, fans will be treated to material from Down At The Khyber. Khyber includes such Plaskett favourites as "Maybe We Should Just Go Home" and "True Patriot Love."

Wednesday's take on Truthfully, Truthfully should prove to be the sauciest of the nights, what with Joel bragging about turning his class into a bad ass classroom in "Come On Teacher" and inviting his baby to be out of the ordinary and come and dance with him in "Extraordinary."

Thursday night the band gets a break. We here at ChartAttack like to fantasize that that night's being saved for a super-secret Thrush Hermit reunion in which the band tackles songs from Clayton Park.

The Emergency will return on Friday and Saturday to wrap things up with back-to-back nights of songs from their latest release, the Polaris Prize-nominated Ashtray Rock. While we're a little sad to see 2005's La De Da get no love in the week's proceedings (it would have been a great night to take your parents or grandparents), we can't get enough of drunk teenagers and rock 'n' roll love triangles and if Joel wants to give us two nights of Ashtray Rock, we will totally take two nights of his awesome concept album.

Here are the dates for the Joel Plaskett Emergency's upcoming shows:

  • Nov. 7 Kingston, ON @ The Ale House
  • Nov. 9 Ottawa, ON @ Barrymore's
  • Nov. 10 Ottawa, ON @ Barrymore's
  • Dec. 10 Toronto, ON @ Horseshoe Tavern (In Need of Medical Attention)
  • Dec. 11 Toronto, ON @ Horseshoe Tavern (Down At The Khyber)
  • Dec. 12 Toronto, ON @ Horseshoe Tavern (Truthfully, Truthfully)
  • Dec. 14 Toronto, ON @ Horseshoe Tavern (Ashtray Rock)
  • Dec. 15 Toronto, ON @ Horseshoe Tavern (Ashtray Rock)
