HALIFAX — Local snarky mod-rockers The Stance have a chip on their shoulders. Their The Stance Shall Inherit The Earth debut EP is riddled with hip-shaking, pompous pop anthems, but not everyone seems to catch their drift.
"A lot of people were confused by the title," says Mark MacAulay. "We didn't expect to inherit the earth with just one record.
"We're still working on it. That being said, the response to the record was wonderful. Lots of crafty people really dug what we are up to."
Mark MacAulay sings while his brother James plays guitar in the band. Together, they personify sibling rivalry. The band are chockfull of personality and pizzazz, but the unrelated rhythm section of bassist Jeff Leadbetter and drummer Matthew Nicoll hold things together.
"We've had our hands pretty full resting on our laurels after the EP release," says James. "But I think we've got that fire inside again. We are a rock 'n' roll explosion waiting to happen."
The band roped in the help of Charles Austin and Dave Ewenson to record a few new demos. The tracks are solid teasers, but a full-length release is still off in the distance due to a lack of finances.
"This new record is going to be a goldmine of great lyrics," says Mark. "Pretty much all my favourite themes are covered: fighter planes, lovers' trysts, espionage and boxing."
Since playing a few dates last fall with Metric, the boys developed a fondness for touring. They've just embarked on their second tour to Ontario and back with rambunctious and raunchy Casio-rocker, B.A. Johnston. "Nothing screams fun quite like a half-naked, beer-soaked B.A. screaming at his dying Casio while doing the worm," says James.
"We played with Metric on a couple of Atlantic Canada dates. That was fun. You know what? Kids are bonkers for Metric, and we're certainly not above getting some of that sweet spillover. We live for spillover."
