Rockers Take On NHL Oldsters In Juno Cup Wednesday February 21, 2007 @ 07:00 PM By: ChartAttack.com Staff
 Jim Cuddy |
The hockey hotbed of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan will host the fourth annual Juno Cup hockey game between former National Hockey League players and a rag-tag bunch of shinny-loving musicians on March 30.
Captain Jim Cuddy will lead a Rockers team featuring confirmed players (and Juno nominees) Sam Roberts, Tomi Swick, Barney Bentall, George Canyon, Jon Gallant (Billy Talent), Richard Underhill and Sloan's Chris Murphy and Andrew Scott.
"Recruiting players is an easy job, as most of the Rockers get to live out dreams playing against these former NHLers," says Cuddy. "For me, as a Leafs fan, it'll be even more exciting playing against the legendary Hound Line."
The Hound Line is comprised of Wendel Clark, Russ Courtnall and Gary Leeman. The trio acquired that name when they played for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the '80s because they were all alumni of Saskatchewan's respected Notre Dame Hounds squad. They'll be joined by smooth-skating NHL teammates Paul Coffey and Mark Napier, grinders Brad Dalgarno and Mike Pelyk and enforcer Bob Probert, among others.
It will be interesting to see what Rocker has the balls to tangle with Probert. Will it be the tenacious Roberts? The lanky Underhill? The cowboy, Canyon? Or perhaps the ChartAttack dark horse pick, Murphy?
Tickets for the game, which are part of the Juno Awards festivities in nearby Saskatoon, go on sale on Saturday for $15 apiece. It's a fundraiser for the Canadian Academy Of Recording Arts And Sciences' MusiCan program, which promotes and contributes to keeping music alive in Canadian schools.
For those of you not in the vicinity of the Art Hauser Centre, the Juno Cup will be televised for the first time. MTV Live's Daryn Jones, Aliya-Jasmine Sovani and Johnny Hockin will host the one-hour special, while TSN's Michael Landsberg will provide play-by-play for the game. The show will air at 9 p.m. ET and will also be carried online by MTV.ca, CTV.ca and TSN.ca.
