Alicia Keys, the Barenaked Ladies and Our Lady Peace are a few of the big names that will perform at Time To Deliver, an August 13 benefit concert at Toronto's Rogers Centre that will be staged as part of the opening ceremonies for the 2006 International AIDS Conference.
Other performers included in the lineup Blue Man Group, Chantal Kreviazuk, Amanda Marshall, Massari, the Red Spirit Singers And Dancers, DJ Tiesto and Zimbabwean singer Thomas Mapfumo.
The evening will also feature appearances by actors Richard Gere, Sandra Oh and Olympia Dukakis. Former U.S. president Bill Clinton will attend the conference, but not the opening night's festivities.
The program kicks off at 7 p.m. with opening remarks from Gere, Governor General Michaelle Jean, Toronto mayor David Miller, UNAIDS executive director Peter Piot and Frika Chia Iskandar, an Indonesian woman living with HIV/AIDS. There will also be a keynote address by Bill and Melinda Gates, and a performance by Canadian opera star Measha Brueggergosman and musicians from the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The concert begins directly afterwards at 9 p.m.
The video for "Song For Africa," a charity single featuring several Canadian musicians, will premiere at the event.
While 25,000 tickets are being issued to conference delegates, 20,000 have been made available to the general public. They range in price from $30 to $150 and are available from Ticketmaster.
Sales proceeds will benefit the Canadian Foundation For AIDS Research, the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund Canada, the AIDS Committee Of Toronto's Community Partners Fund and the next International AIDS Conference, which is scheduled for 2008 in Mexico City.
