TODAY'S TOP 4 HEADLINES:

KIRK HAMMETT UNDERGOES EMERGENCY SURGERY

Metallica fans were given a tiny scare yesterday afternoon when news surfaced that guitarist Kirk Hammett was in a London hospital recovering from hastily-scheduled surgery. The band's label have confirmed that Hammett, visiting the United Kingdom to promote the upcoming Metallica album Garage Inc., was rushed to the hospital for an emergency appendectomy. The procedure apparently went well, and the label insist that this will not impact the band's North American tour schedule which kicks off in Toronto November 17. All the best to Kirk for a speedy recovery!

ARE MARILYN MANSON FANS GANG MEMBERS?

Here's a story that was too rich for DAMN to pass up, kids. Sonicnet reports today that a non-profit organization in Texas have been hired by school authorities to conduct "Marilyn Manson awareness" seminars. The seminars apparently involve the distribution and careful study of over 100 pages of Manson song lyrics, excerpts from the autobiography "The Long Hard Road Out Of Hell" and printouts from various Manson websites. Even police officers who are assigned to work within schools have been sent to these training sessions, with tips on how to spot Manson fans by their dress and make-up. The seminars also suggest that these fans be classified as gang members becuase of their rampant drug use, vandalism and taste for ritual sacrifice. Ramon Jacquez, chief wacko at the Crime Prevention Resource Center in Fort Worth, Texas told Sonicnet (among many other things) that:

  • "A majority of them [Manson fans] are taking drugs"
  • "A majority of them do graffiti either on the [school] premises, or in their neighbourhood, or on their books"
  • Manson's fans are as bad as gang members for criminal activity
  • Most members of the goth-rock community are involved in ritual sacrifices
  • He has no interest in censoring Marilyn Manson, and offers the seminars as a service to the community

If DAMN were this guy's superior at the Resource Center, his ass would have been fired three kinds of yesterday for wasting taxpayers' money and teachers' time, not to mention implying that kids are instantly criminals and monsters for listening to ANYONE's music. Jacquez admits he has no specific examples of crime in the community as committed by Manson fans, or any police records that indicate a link between the controversial singer's music and any incidents of sacrifice. Imagine that...Ramon, your fifteen minutes are up.

WYLDE RATTS PISSED OVER VELVET GOLDMINE OST

As the new Todd Hayes flick Velvet Goldmine opens around the world, members of an all-star band who contributed to the soundtrack have expressed their unhappiness with music that appears in the film. The movie is an homage to the days of glam-rock, inspired somewhat by the careers of David Bowie and Iggy Pop. In the film, hot property Ewan McGregor plays the lead singer of a band (based loosely on The Stooges), and his own vocals appear in the film and on the accompanying soundtrack. One song in particular, a version of Iggy's "T.V. Eye" has the musicians that recorded the version extremely upset.

The Wylde Ratts are one of two supergroups assembled to record classic glam and punk tunes for the film. Members of the band include Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and Steve Shelley, The Stooges' Ron Asheton, ex-Minutemen/firehose bassist Mike Watt, and Mudhoney's Mark Arm. Arm is furious that his recorded vocals (which he is credited with in the film and the album's liner notes) were replaced by Ewan McGregor's vocals without his consent. He's disappointed that the film's producers would make such a decision independent of the artists involved, and wants his name removed from the project. Similarly, producer Don Fleming has spoken out against the changes, and is also being very vocal about the poor sound quality of the McGregor-led version of "T.V. Eye".

In response, the film's producers have defended their actions by saying that McGregor's vocals were used to lend the film some consistency, and that the Wylde Ratts version was recorded before the movie even commenced shooting. They contend that once Ewan cut his version (he had previously been undecided about whether he wanted to sing himself), the decision was a natural one. Stay tuned...

KINGSMEN WIN LONG "LOUIE LOUIE" COURT BATTLE

Thirty-five years after they recorded the definitive version of "Louie Louie", American garage rockers the Kingsmen might finally reap some financial benefits. Over the last five years, a bitter lawsuit has been waged between the band and the two record companies who own the rights to the song. The Kingsmen were seeking royalty payments and licensing fees they had been promised in a contract dating from 1963, and also applied for the rights to all royalties as of the suit's filing (1993). Last week, a Supreme Court judge refused to hear an appeal to the band's claims, so it looks like the money is on the way. The companies, Gusto Records and GML Inc., are expected to pay the amount owing, but no word is available yet on who now holds the rights to one of the most recorded songs in the history of popular music.

Mike McCann is a DJ, writer and music fanatic who climbed the ladder from college radio to a major label weasel, and now has come to rest happily at Chart. He loves Depeche Mode, The Wonder Stuff, Monty Python, calamari, and he's awfully fond of the Stretcha, too. He's also been known to mangle great songs live with understanding bands who keep letting him get up to sing 'em...stupid bastards.

    Quote of the Week

"If we have a mind that is already fragmented and he's listening to violent, kill-your-mother, anti-authority music, what is that going to do to his mind?"

-- Ramon Jacquez, suggesting that Marilyn Manson's music could be the tripwire that turns good kids bad...or that he wants to kill his mom and is working on an alibi.
