LEAD SINGER OF I MOTHER EARTH CALLS IT QUITS

At what seems to be quite possibly the height of the group's success, I Mother Earth frontman Edwin has decided to leave the group. Here's the short and decidedly non-descript letter from the band's management company:

I Mother Earth has parted ways with singer Edwin. The decision was a mutual one, as both parties are moving in different directions. Before the split, the band and Edwin committed to the upcoming Edgefest tour, and will honour that committment together, as a band. I Mother Eart are currently writing their next album and are looking for a new singer.

No word as to any possible underlying rumours about what caused the split, but we'll keep you posted.

AND IN A RELATED STORY...MORE ABOUT THE EDGEFEST

Universal Concerts, in conjunction with MuchMusic and Toronto radio station 102.1 The Edge are presenting the eight-city, cross-Canada summer concert series. The Edgefest is modeled after a successful gig last summer in Barrie's Molson Park where an all-Canadian bill sold the park out to 35,000 Toronto-area fans the day before Canada Day. The concert was such a hit, the show is going out on the road this year. Toronto (June 28 at Molson Park in Barrie again) and Ottawa (June 30 at Landsdowne Park) line-ups were announced, including Our Lady Peace, The Tea Party, the aforementioned I Mother Earth, Holly McNarland and BTK for the main stage, as well as American rockers Collective Soul (the only non-Canadian act on the bill). The second stage will include Glueleg, Age of Electric, Finger Eleven (formerly Rainbow Butt Monkeys), Kinnie Starr, Sara Craig and Zuckerbaby. More dates, cities and line-ups will be announced soon.

A NOTE TO ALL YOU N.I.N.-IES

Trent Reznor's label, , has obviously caught wind of a good thing and run with it. The 'hit' Nine Inch Nail song from David Lynch's Lost Highway soundtrack, "Perfect Drug", is coming out as an e.p. for the song, featuring mighty extended versions courtesy of four like-minded groups. Expect might lengthy alterations courtesy of Meat Beat Manifesto, Plug, The Orb and Spacetime Continuum to hit stores on May 13th.

OZZY AND MARILYN TAKE ON THE WORLD!

Classic rawk-er Ozzy Osbourne grew irate when promoters of his Richmond, Virginia rock show -- dubbed the Ozzfest Tour -- insisted that Marilyn Manson be taken off the bill of the May 10th show. Like we mentioned yesterday, the American Civil Liberties Union are fighting the matter in court, but just in case you were wondering, here's what the mighty Oz had to say in his to the promoters :

"Nobody has the right to tell me who I can perform with. I love America. This is the only country in the world to have an instituted an act as progressive as the First Amendment. Situations like this are cyclical. They tried to stop Elvis in the '50s, The Beatles in the '60s, A Clockwork Orange in the '70s and Ozzy Osbourne in the '80s. Blackmail is a stain on free society, and I will not give in to it on any level. This is not an issue of taste. It is an issue of civil liberty and freedom. You could be next and don't believe otherwise."
